Nightmare's Ally

When inspiration comes from the unknown.

About

Nightmare’s Ally is an interactive video installation that explores accepting nightmares as inspiration. A proximity sensor allows viewers to approach the screen and trigger the animation.

The artwork features a process of accepting this idea with an abstraction of 3D elements. The installation includes a vertical LED screen, proximity sensor, and calming musical accompaniment.

Explanation

An interactive video installation explores the process of embracing nightmares as a source of inspiration. It utilizes a stunning 3D animation and cutting-edge sensors to trigger the animation. To enhance the viewer’s connection with the artwork, a proximity sensor has been integrated into the design. By approaching the screen, the viewer can immerse themselves in the captivating story depicted in the main animation. After standing in front of the sensor for more than 5 seconds, the “Standby” animation fades out, allowing the main animation to begin.

The installation starts in a dark room with a bed in the center, where luminous particles represent creativity and the birth of ideas. A man is trapped and covered by a cloth, anxiously trying to free himself. This symbolizes the moment when a nightmare takes over ideas, depriving them of their light and color. In the next scene, a giant prism in the center of a city reveals the nightmare in its abstract form for the first time. Then, the scene shifts to a man underneath the prism, reaching out and touching the nightmare, while luminous particles emerge from him, symbolizing the acceptance of its presence and the potential for symbiosis with it. Finally, the prism is surrounded by luminous particles representing creativity, suggesting the creation of new ideas from the nightmare. Once the animation concludes, it returns to its “Standby” state.

The accompanying music is slow and calming, providing a contrast to the common notion that nightmares generate tension and fear.

Technically, the video installation consists of a vertical screen with LED backlighting, creating a captivating ambiance. A proximity sensor has been incorporated in the front to detect the viewer’s presence, and a sound monitor plays a thoughtfully crafted musical piece, providing a multisensory experience that is sure to leave a lasting impression.
